"Passing women only" group

glad to find a tribe here on anarchist feminism and glad to be here...I've been thinking about something...

Before goin' on I should probably intro myself...Alecs, 22, San Francisco, CA

At my school, there's an anarchist coalition type club and we've been around for about two years. Recently, a group of female members decided to start an anarcho-feminist sub group because they felt that the existing group was too male-dominated physically and ideologically, which I agree.

Here's the thing...

Upon finding out about the sub-group, I became interested and wanted to join. However, when I approached one of the organizers o the group about this, she essentially said that only PASSING women are able to join...

I wasn't so much angry...just disappointed.

I understand the group wanted to maintain a safe space for women...but was I expecting too much for my fellow anarchists to not judge based on face value and actually see who I am?? They've already known me and worked with me for a while too which is another bummer...

Are you only a woman if you are able to pass or choose to pass?

My history of trans and queer activism says no...and so does my understading of how anarchism should be.

Am I simply too naive to expect acceptance?

Can anyone tell me of any mexican/central.south american/spanish punk bands that are at the very least female fronted?

I especially like angry political stuff or funny stuff or pretty-melodic stuff or feminist stuff or gay stuff or dancey bouncey ska-ish stuff......oh yeah trumpets or interesting instrument are a plus.

Women of Juarez Update:

JUAREZ FEMICIDE UPDATE: BULLDOZING THE MEMORIES OF MURDERED WOMEN

In the run-up to International Women's Day 2007, the memories of
murdered women in Ciudad Juarez are being erased. Workmen have
started clearing a portion of the old cotton field where the
tortured, raped and mutilated remains of 8 young women were
discovered in November 2001. Located near the site of the new US
Consulate in the border city, the cotton field is suddenly in the
middle of a hot commercial zone. New hotels and other establishments
catering to the diplomatic and immigration services offered by the US
government are expected to open soon for business.

Currently, 8 big crosses erected in memory of the murder victims mark
a section of the cotton field. Now a landmark, the field is almost a
required stop for foreign journalists, filmmakers, human rights and
women's activists, and others who reclaim the memories of the young
women. Mothers and other relatives of the victims hold memorials in
the cotton field. For almost five years, Chihuahua state law
enforcement authorities misidentified three of the victims as
Guadalupe Luna de la Rosa, Veronica Martinez and Barbara Aracely
Martinez, all of whom are now considered disappeared persons. Thanks
to the efforts of the Argentine Anthropological Forensic Team, two of
the victims were correctly identified last year as Merlin Elizabeth
Rodriguez Saenz and Maria Rocina Galicia Meraz, both of whom vanished
in 2001. The eighth cotton field victim remains unidentified. "One
does not forget," said Javier Camacho, the new owner of the cotton
field property under development. "It's sad what happened, but
nothing is gained by the crosses, and one way of stopping this is by
developing the border."

Although the cotton field case and scores of other rape- murders in
Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua City stand unsolved, some local officials
and business leaders have increasingly grumbled about the so-called
"myth" or "black legend" of femicide that is allegedly giving Ciudad
Juarez a bad name on the world stage. Especially within the last
year, Ciudad Juarez media have downplayed the women's murders. A
long-running website that publicized the cases of disappeared women
and men, pesquisasenlinea.org, mysteriously vanished from cyberspace,
as did the long-running femicide section of the Norte newspaper.
Readers of major Ciudad Juarez news websites would have had no idea
that Jennifer Lopez was recognized by Amnesty International in a
Berlin ceremony this month for her role in the upcoming Gregory Nava
movie Bordertown, a fictional film about the Juarez women's murders.
While JLO's award received ample attention in the Mexican national
and international press, it did not even register a blip on several
Ciudad Juarez news web sites.

Still, even the leading El Diario newspaper has had trouble
swallowing the official story surrounding three men first accused
last year of orchestrating the cotton field murders. In a February 18
editorial, El Diario questioned the authorities' case and recounted
the long history of police fabricating femicide scapegoats in Ciudad
Juarez and Chihuahua City. Late last week, the Ciudad Juarez press
was also forced to report on a possible new femicide after the body
of a semi- naked woman was discovered on the morning of February 23
in an empty near the city's international airport. Like numerous past
cases, the woman's body was found by playing children. Although the
unidentified woman was found in various stages of undress, a
preliminary official report claimed she was not murdered. Neighbors
said it was the second time that a dead body had been discovered in
the same lot.

CALL FOR HELP

CALL FOR HELP (circulate widely):

This is a call for help to defend a squatted social centre in Copenhagen
which has been running for a long time. There is more about its long
history here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ungdomshuset

The original call (here in an edited/spelling checked version) can be
found here: http://www.ungdomshuset.info/spip.php?article48

=================================================
Troublemakers of the world - We bid you welcome
=================================================

We invite everybody who supports Ungdomshuset to come to Copenhagen in
December. From the 13th through the 17th there will be actions,
workshops, concerts and at least one demonstration.

For seven years we have struggled for a political solution that could
remove the eviction threat against Ungdomshuset. These efforts have been
in vain.

We are still trying to find a peaceful way to save the house, but there
is not much to hope for. Though the politicians have spoken a lot they
have not done anything. The right-wing Christian sect whom the
politicians gave our house to is refusing to sell, despire generous
offers from an independent fund. Instead they have asked for permission
to tear it down.

>From just about everywhere there has been statements of support. From
local citizens to revolutionary political groups abroad. Danish labour
unions, artists, mucisians and many more have spoken in our favour. We
are very greatfull for this support. But so far it has not had an effect
on the leadership of the Church that is crusading against us. They still
push for war.

We are still hoping and working for a political solution but from
December 14th onwards the question is no longer *if* we are going to be
attacked by the police in an eviction attempt. From that day on it will
be a question of *when* we are attacked.

That is why we are calling upon all the friends of Ungdomshuset in
particular and supporters of squatting and social change in general to
come to Copenhagen from the 13th of December. Activities are planned
until December 17th, but you are welcome to stay longer. We need you.

Hope to see you here!
======================

women in the ezln

Women - the struggle within the struggle
The still water in the vessel overflows and turns itself into a wild river of movement ....
The women are the spiritual and material support of this army; if we can survive in large numbers, it is thanks to them .... (Subcommandante Marcos)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When EZLN (Zapatista Army of National Liberation) began to organise some years ago, the women understood that they too could and should fight with all their people against the exploitation, discrimination and abuse of power they are victims of because of the fact that they are indigenous . But at the same time they understood that because of the simple fact that they are women, they had another front to fight on. They had to put an end to the discrimination they suffer within their own society, a traditional and extremely macho society in which they are considered inferior beings with no right to a place in public life or to education. After long debates between all the groups of the different communities, the women spoke out through their spokeswoman Ramona, a member of the Indigenous Clandestine Revolutionary Committee (CCRI), to demand that their rights be recognised. Thus, on the eighth of March, 1983, the Womens' Law of the EZLN was passed.

The ten points of the law are: 1. Women, regardless of their race, creed, colour or political affiliation, have the right to participate in the revolutionary struggle in ways determined by their desires and ability. 2. Women have the right to work and receive a fair salary. 3. Women have the right to decide the number of children they will bear and care for. 4. Women have the right to participate in the affairs of the community and to hold positions of authority if they are freely and democratically elected. 5. Women and their children have the right to primary attention in matters of health and nutrition. 6. Women have the right to education. 7. Women have the right to choose their partner and are not to be forced into marriage. 8. Women shall not be beaten or physically abused, neither by family nor by strangers. Rape and attempted rape will be severely punished.

9. Women will be able to hold positions of leadership in the organisation and military rank in the revolutionary armed forces. 10. Women will have all the rights and duties laid down in the revolutionary laws and rules.

The acceptance of this law has permitted the women to join their people in the struggle against the oppressor.

Some decided to join the armed struggle. They are the insurgents, a generation of very young women that the people have sent to war. They joined the EZLN and make up 35% of it. The majority hold some rank. They are in positions of responsibility, organised and possess a great capacity for the struggle, because as they explain themselves: We have nothing to lose because before we did not exist. They were born into rural indigenous communities in Chiapas but they have never lead a normal life, do not live in houses or have children, nor any project for the future other than to put an end to the injustice that has been killing them for many centuries. The Zapatista Army has given them something: they have learnt to read and write, learned about politics, combat tactics and the use of arms. But the most important thing is that they are respected by their male comrades and share the same rights and duties as them: a great cultural leap compared to their mothers, which is the reason it is the latter who urge them to join the EZLN.

The others, those who cannot join the army because they have children to look after, fight from their communities. They are members of the CCRI and their work is organisational and ideological. They are busy organising womens' groups so that little by little they teach each other what they learn: mainly Spanish (to be able to defend themselves against the oppressor) and politics (so that they all understand better what they are fighting for and against). They are also busy providing food, clothes etc..

But the struggle is the same for all of them: a struggle to get their rights as women respected by their own people and that the right of this people to live a dignified life in their own land.

We do this hoping to inform, enrage, and inspire, as we spread the skills and tools we need to bring our vision of ecological democracy to fruition.

fear of women sticking together

hi

I'm feeling a really strong need to connect with other women on some thoughts/feelings/experiences I'm having lately.

Something specific happened - I did a sticker art show and put up a number of stickers together that have woman characters on them. Someone put 2 stickers next to them, one said: femme mafia, the other said: We will fuck you (up).

The one need I have is to talk about those two stickers. What is that about? Is it a criticism of the "women" - as in if women stick together they're asexual and hostile, or is it some kind of support - we're not sex objects, watch out we're fierce? I feel unhappy with either intention. I don't want women sticking together to be such a big deal, I want more options for being than to be sexual or not, kick peoples' asses or not. Thoughts?

The other thing is that I realized that I wanted to talk to women about this and didn't have too many to talk to. And the ones I could talk to are my closest friends, and our conversation would stay between us. Tooo personal for me. I was trying to email friends and acquaintances to start a conversation and realized how nervous it made me to include some women acquaintances. How likely it is that some of them would be freaked out by me starting a discussion with a feminist perspective. And I thought - WOW, why is it so hard to talk in a way that's personal and political with other women? It's like we're freaked out by sticking together too, like we have adopted that fear ourselves.

Would love to hear peoples' thoughts/feelings/experiences...
The Really Really FREE Market in San Francisco

The Really Really FREE Market!
Saturday April 30, 2005 12-4pm at Dolores Park

We would love for you to come and offer your special gifts and talents at this event. Full explanation below.

The RRFM is based on the idea of a gift economy, namely that giving feels good; that if we were to all to share what we had, we wouldn’t have less than we have now, we’d actually all have more than we currently have. Giving is a pleasure in itself. Gift others with your clutter. Gift others with your talents. Gift others with your presence!

Bring *your thing* to the event, whatever that is! Material goods, a
service to provide, a skill you have that you want to teach to others, a performance, or anything else!

The Really, Really Free Market consists of the sum of its participants. The gift you bring to the event, helps create what the event is for others, just as what others bring to the event, creates what the event is for you.

This is not an event for bartering. This is not an event to advertise your company or yourself, leave your businesscards at home! It’s about gifting without the expectation of anything in return, and it's about taking without feeling the need to reciprocate to that individual.

Material goods to give: Books, clothing, odds and ends, etc.; healing
arts: massage, reiki, yoga; circus arts (performing and teaching):
juggling, poi, stilts; sports and games: soccer, frisbee, etc.; bicycle
repair; there will also be a kids' space with facepainting, games, and
more; and of course, food!

We are hoping to make this a regular event in San Francisco. The first Really, Really Free Market is being held on:

Saturday April 30, 2005 from 12-4pm at Dolores Park.

If you like what you just read, get involved! Come to the event! Bring your own gifts to share! Spread the info and get more people involved! This event takes YOU to make it happen!

Please respond with your thoughts, ideas, what you plan on bringing to the event, etc.

See you April 30th!

anarcha feminist manifesto

Manifeste Anarchoféministe
Anarchafeminist Manifesto
Translated from French (Bulletin C.R.I.F.A. No 44 mars -avril 1983 p. 12)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All over the world most women have no rights whatsoever to decide upon important matters which concern their lives. Women suffer from oppressions of two kinds: 1) the general social oppression of the people, and 2) secondly sexism - oppression and discrimination because of their sex.

There are five main forms of oppression:

- Ideological oppression, brainwash by certain cultural traditions, religion, advertising and propaganda. Manipulation with concepts and play upon women's feelings and susceptibilities. Widespread patriarchal and authoritarian attitudes and capitalistic mentality in all areas.

- State oppression, hierarchical forms of organization with command lines downwards from the top in most interpersonal relations, also in the so-called private life .

- Economic exploitation and repression, as a consumer and a worker in the home and in low-salary women's jobs .

- Violence, under the auspices of the society as well as in the private sphere - indirectly when there is coercion because of lack of alternatives and direct physical violence.

- Lack of organization, tyranny of the structurelessness which pulverizes responsibility and creates weakness and inactivity.

These factors work together and contribute simultaneously to sustain each other in a vicious circle. There is no panacea to break the circle, but it isn't unbreakable.

Anarcha-feminism is a matter of consciousness. The consciousness which puts guardians off work. The principles of a liberating society thus stand perfectly clear to us.

Anarcha-feminism means women's independence and freedom on an equal footing with men. A social organization and a social life where no-one is superior or inferior to anyone and everybody is coordinate, women as well as men. This goes for all levels of social life, also the private sphere.

Anarcha-feminism implies that women themselves decide and take care of their own matters, individually in personal matters, and together with other women in matters which concern several women. In matters which concern both sexes essentially and concretely women and men shall decide on an equal footing.

Women must have self-decision over their own bodies, and all matters concerning contraception and childbirth are to be decided upon by women themselves.

It must be fought both individually and collectively against male domination, attitudes of ownership and control over women, against repressive laws and for women's economic and social autonomy and independence.

Crisis centers, day care centers, study and discussion groups, women's culture activities etc. must be established, and be run under womens's own direction.

The traditional patriarchal nuclear family should be replaced by free associations between men and women based on equal right to decide for both parts and with respect for the individual person's autonomy and integrity.

Sex-stereotyping in education, media and at the place of work must be abolished. Radical sharing of the work by the sexes in ordinary jobs, domestic life and education is a suitable mean.

The structure of working life must be radically changed, with more part-time work and flat organized cooperation at home as well as in society. The difference between men's work and women's work must be abolished. Nursing and taking care of the children must concern men just as much as women.

Female power and female prime ministers will neither lead the majority of women to their ends nor abolish oppression. Marxist and bourgeoisie feminists are misleading the fight for women's liberation. For most women it is not going to be any feminism without anarchism. In other words, anarcha-feminism does not stand for female power or female prime ministers, it stands for organization without power and without prime ministers.

The double oppression of women demands a double fight and double organizing: on the one hand in feminist federations, on the other hand in the organizations of anarchists. The anarcha-feminists form a junction in this double organizing.

A serious anarchism must also be feminist otherwise it is a question of patriarchal half-anarchism and not real anarchism. It is the task of the anarcha-feminists to secure the feminist feature in anarchism. There will be no anarchism without feminism.

An essential point in anarcha-feminism is that the changes must begin today, not tomorrow or after the revolution. The revolution shall be permanent. We must start today by seeing through the oppression in the daily life and do something to break the pattern here and now.

We must act autonomously, without delegating to any leaders the right to decide what we wish and what we shall do: we must make decisions all by ourselves in personal matters, together with other women in pure female matters, and together with the male fellows in common matters.
